Just5 Cell Phone For Seniors
The Just5 cell phone for seniors and kids is one of a handful of phones now bucking the conventional trend for the latest and greatest mobiles. Fitting into a growing category of cell phones in which less is better, the Just5 J509 is as handy as it is simple. And that should be just about right for special-need consumers. [MORE...]
Why splurge for a cell phone with bells and whistles if you need just the essentials? Case in point is the Just5 J509 cell phone for seniors.
Designed with just basic cell phone functions in mind, the J509 targets seniors, people with poor eyesight or hearing problems, and people with medical conditions that require constant care, in addition to children who need a starter phone, according to Just5.
"We want to open mobile phones to specific populations that may have difficulty using the latest and greatest mobile gadgets, especially the current generation of baby boomers who need a safe, reliable phone," said Alex Petrov, vice president at Just5 Americas.
There's no missing the extra-large buttons on the Just5 keypad. But just in case, this phone will talk back to you loud and clear as you press each button, making it ideal for limited sight people.
A nice add-on to this handy gadget is a surprisingly bright built-in LED flashlight.
A panic button on the back side of the J509 is integrated with the phone's personal emergency response system.
Pressing the SOS button in an emergency causes the phone to text an urgent message to up to five pre-programmed numbers and then keeps dialing the numbers in a pre-determined order until someone answers.
Throughout the dialing process, the phone blasts a loud siren. It automatically switches to hands-free speaker mode once someone answers the emergency phone call.
You can expect about 100 minutes of talk time with the Just5 cell phone for seniors and children, which weighs only about 15 ounces. In standby mode, the phone's battery could stay charged for up to six days.
By invitation of the Just5 company, hands-on evaluation by Trends In Cell Phones confirmed the J509 phone to be a simple no-frills device that really works as advertised. Slip a prepaid SIM card into this GSM unlocked phone and you are all set.
Much to its advantage, the Just5 cell phone is not a lot of things, by design. It comes with some ringtones allowing you to identify callers by pre-programmed sounds, but it is not a music phone by any means. A built-in FM radio lets you keep up with your local FM stations, but it is not a exactly like listening to a boombox.
For text messaging the J509 may prove somewhat cumbersome if you try composing lengthy text on its narrow display window; used strictly for SMS (short message service), it is quite functional. But the Just5 cell phone for seniors is all about keeping it simple, and it does that quite well.
